Huck weaving is a traditional Swedish embroidery technique that can be used to create beautiful afghans. Best of all, it is easy to learn and do! In this two-day workshop, students will be given a simple pattern and learn the basic techniques needed to create the afghan. Students will have time between class sessions to work on their afghans. The last session we will go over your work, troubleshoot and answer questions, and you will be shown how to finish the edges when the afghan is complete.
Materials: Students have a choice of making either a Baby Afghan or an Adult Afghan. The amount of material you need to purchase will be based on what size afghan you choose to make.
For a Baby Afghan: 1 1/2 yards of Monk's cloth (can be purchased at Hancock Fabric, some Walmart stores, and some JoAnn Fabric stores) Please wash and dry so it shrinks before you come to class. 2 - 3 oz skeins of acrylic 4ply (worsted weight) yarn in pastel colors. Choose colors that look nice next to each other. Options are two different shades of the same color, one variegated color yarn and one coordinating solid color - be creative! One #13 metal yarn needle.
For an Adult Afghan: 2 1/2 yards of Monk's cloth (can be purchased at Hancock Fabric, some Walmart stores, and some JoAnn Fabric stores) Please wash and dry so it shrinks before you come to class. 2 - 4 oz skeins of acrylic 4ply (worsted weight) yarn in two colors that look nice together. Typically the afghans are made using two shades of the same color (one light, one dark) though the patterns also look nice if one variegated yarn and one coordinating solid color are used. Be creative! But please make sure your colors will look nice next to each other. One #13 metal yarn needle.
