Third Annual Writing Contest

Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts has a rich tradition of supporting artists and writers in their artistic endeavors; it is with great enthusiasm to announce the Third Annual Writing Contest with this year’s judge, Lara Mimosa Montes. Writers are invited to submit recent original work for consideration for a chapbook to be published this fall by Red Bird Chapbooks.

Lara Mimosa Montes is a writer based in New York and Minneapolis. She holds a PhD in English from The Graduate Center, City University of New York. Her poems and essays have appeared in Boston Review, Fence, BOMB, Puerto del Sol, and elsewhere. She also teaches poetry at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and works as an editor for Triple Canopy. Her first book, The Somnambulist, is available from Horse Less Press. She was born in the Bronx.

The judge will be reading all entries anonymously.

Contest Rules:

The Deadline is August 12, 2017 at 11:59 pm

All Entries must be emailed to as a .doc or .pdf file.

Include within the email two copies of each entry: one with the author’s name and contact (phone, email, address) and one without.

Entries may be Poetry or Fiction/Nonfiction

Poetry entries can include up to 3 poems (five-pages maximum)

Fiction/Nonfiction entries have a 1,000-word maximum

Entries can be one short story, essay, or a self-contained excerpt from a novel

Two Entries per person is the maximum.

For consideration, entries must not have been previously published works or accepted for publication elsewhere.

Author must be a current Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts member before submitting entries. Visit the website for membership details. Annual memberships cost $32 for an individual, $24 for senior, and $12 for students.

Each submission has a $10 fee per entry. This is payable online via Paypal or in person/via mail/over the phone by cash, credit, or check.

First, second, and third prizes will be awarded $100, $75, $50 respectively. Prize winners and selected works will be included in the second edition of the Banfill-Locke Chapbook, which will be printed by Red Bird Chapbook and available for distribution in October 2017. Writers selected to be published in this year’s chapbook will receive a complimentary edition of the 2017 Chapbook.
